what does “out-of-network” and “superbill” mean?
Out-of-Network Therapist: An out-of-network therapist refers to a counselor or mental health professional who does not have a contract or agreement with a client’s health insurance company. The client will pay the therapist’s fee, receive a superbill from the therapist, and submit the superbill to their insurance to potentially obtain reimbursement for seeing an out-of-network provider.
Superbill: A superbill is an itemized statement that a therapist provides to a client after a counseling session. It often includes the date of service, type of therapy service (e.g. individual therapy), therapy codes, diagnosis codes, the therapist's credentials and license information, a brief session description, and the fee amount charged. Clients can submit a superbill to insurance companies to seek reimbursement for therapy fees.
*The amount of reimbursement a client receives from their insurance company for out-of-network therapy fees is subject to the insurer's policies and discretion.
